What is spyware & adware?
DON'T KNOW what spyware/adware is?
Spyware is a malicious form of software that runs on your computer (with or without your knowledge) and tracks usage and reports it to others, such as advertisers. This includes tracking the conversations you have using instant-messaging.
And some software can be far more damaging to your computer than just tracking your usage!
What is adware?
Spyware and adware get confused. Basically, adware may bombard you with pop-up adverts, or deliver 'targeted' ads within the web page that you are visiting. The key difference, I guess, is the fact that adware makes itself known whilst spyware can hide inside your computer.

Spyware & adware in the news
So-called spyware and adware is making the news right now...
- The
numbers racket costing you a fortune (Guardian article)
- BT tackles premium rate dial-up fraud
- Spyware: The Next Spam?
- The
secrets your computer just can't keep safe (BBC article)
- Spies at liberty in your PC (Guardian article, written in 2002!)
...this is good news because the problem is finally being understood by the general media, and therefore by the general web user.
This is bad news because chances are your computer has already suffered a spyware attack, and may still be infected. (My own computer has been successfully attacked a couple of times, causing me to waste several hours removing the spyware!)
How does
spyware & adware get on my computer?
Chances are, as a freebie-seeker your computer is probably infected with spyware! (Unless, of course, you've installed some spyware-checking software!) Why? Well, let's just say that some of that amazing "I can't believe this is free" software, comes at a price!
(Often you install more than you bargain for when installing free software!)
But, any computer can get infected.
I visited a site to do with words a while ago (finding different meanings to words), and my machine was infected automatically with a trojan (hidden) program (in this case, it was an Internet dialler that would attempt to change my dial-up connection so that it would cost £££s per minute rather than pennies per minute to go online).
The site also tried to change my homepage, and do a load of other stuff that I didn't want.
At the very least, this spyware slows your computer down. And no-one wants that, do they?
